Homicide
No offense is considered more serious in the criminal justice system than homicide. Police, prosecutors, and the justice system respond overwhelmingly to a suspected homicide. With penalties that range from 25 years to mandatory life sentences, anyone charged with homicide is in a fight for their life.
Attorney Zachar regularly represents clients in homicide cases from investigation through trial. He has represented clients charged with intentional homicide, reckless/drug delivery (“Len Bias”) homicide, and OWI/Vehicular Homicide, and taken several complex homicide cases to jury trial, and has been awarded the WACDL Martin Hanson Advocates Prize five times for jury acquittals in complex homicide prosecutions. Attorney Zachar has completed advanced training in investigating homicide cases, forensic evidence, forensic pathology, toxicology, false confessions, and trial advocacy. He is one of the few private bar attorneys in the state with the training and trial experience to be certified by the Wisconsin State Public Defender’s Office to represent clients in First Degree Intentional Homicide cases. Attorney Zachar represented a client in a high profile First Degree Intentional Homicide in which his client was acquitted on the basis of self-defense. In 2019, Attorney Zachar represented Erik Sackett in an acquittal that drew national media attention. In 2023 he represented Lori Phillips in a nationally-televised homicide trial in which his client was acquitted. Attorney Zachar has also secured recent jury acquittals in homicide prosecutions involving drug overdose deaths and impaired driving homicide.
